What is web hosting?

We'll give you a quick introduction.

Hosting Introduction

Web hosting introduction

A website consists of a set of files, including code and images. For public access, these files need to be made available on the World Wide Web. This is done by storing the files on a server, also referred to as Web Hosting. The server is a purpose built computer which runs 24/7 from a specialist facility (known as a datacentre) with extremely fast internet connections.

We can provide web hosting suitable for different requirements, this page gives a quick introduction to each type of web hosting.

Domain Names

Domain Names

A "Domain Name" (or simply "Domain") is the address used to access your website, it can also be used for private email addresses. For example kloudhost.net and google.com are both domain names. The domain name alone isn't very useful, you must connect it with a web hosting account - our staff can help you with this if necessary.

Finding your own domain name simply requires searching for an available one and then registering it. The registration cost is normally less than £10/year.

Shared Hosting

Shared Hosting

Shared Hosting is the most common form of web hosting, suitable for most websites. This means you have your own isolated account on a server which is securely shared with other websites.

Most low traffic websites, including e-commerce websites, WordPress websites and more are suited to Shared Hosting. If you're just starting out, this is most likely the type of hosting you need.

Reseller Hosting

Reseller Hosting

Reseller Hosting works in a similar way to Shared Hosting, your websites are hosted on a powerful server which is shared with other customers. The key difference with a reseller account is the ability to provision sub accounts for your customers. Each sub account is a fully isolated shared hosting account with its own control panel.

This is perfect for providing hosting accounts to your customers or to host multiple websites of your own in a cost effective way.

Dedicated Servers

Dedicated Servers

If your website becomes too busy for shared hosting, the next natural step is to have your own server. A dedicated server is just that, a server dedicated to your requirements only – no more sharing with other customers!

This can offer various benefits over shared hosting such as being able to utilize the server's full hardware capacity and configure software to your needs only. However the downside is there are higher costs involved and someone (a "system administrator") needs to manage the server.

We offer Fully Managed Dedicated Servers, which provides you with the benefits of a dedicated server but we handle every aspect of management – it's a complete package for any customer who has outgrown shared hosting.
